This is a beautifully carved African Makonde sculpture on rare ebony wood.
The Makonde are an ethnic group from Tanzania and northern Mozambique. Their sculptures were especially sought after in the 1950s and 60s.
This particular sculpture was hand carved from a single piece of wood which still has it's bark intact. The carving depicts facial features and is beautifully detailed. An exceptional example of Makonde artistry.
